Recruiting the next generation of Makers – Closing the Skills Gap for 21st Century Workforce

Session Abstract:

In an era in which education and training has never been more important for economic prosperity. The country is facing a “skills gap” of talented graduates to design and make things in America. Learn how Newport News Shipbuilding has a proven model for Career Pathways whose partnership with Hampton Roads Public Schools (Virginia), through which students are mentored and given opportunities to experience future careers and gain the skills need to be career and college ready.

In addition to filling the talent pipeline with career-ready citizens. Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) an early adopter of the Training Within Industry programs used it during WWII to close the skills gap for non-traditional shipbuilders who went off to fight in the war. Currently NNS is enhancing its effectiveness in closing the skills gap by coupling TWI principles with the innovation and technology associated with augmented reality, this new application has been coined “Augmented TWI”. Mobile AR technologies can create solutions that include step-by-step instructions using visual overlays of the right information on equipment, machine, and panel operations. Work is now completed faster without errors by inexperience operators.

To address the skills gap Virginia is partnering with its schools and businesses to use the AME adopt-a-school on national Manufacturing Day model. Governor Terence R. McAuliffe led the way in issuing a proclamation in support of coupling the AME Adopt-a-School program with Manufacturing Day. Williamsburg-James City County (WJCC) Public Schools (Virginia) was the first school district in North America to deploy the program. Learn how the WJCC schools used the Adopt-a-School program to connect manufacturers with schools and colleges in their communities with an innovative new program. It opens students’ eyes and gives them an opportunity to experience practical, hands-on learning and to help manufacturers give back to the community while helping grow the next generation of Makers.

About the Facilitator:

Dr. Jeffrey D. Carroll – An educator for 25 years as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal, Jeff has presented on the topics of organizational diagnostics, instructional improvement and social media.   At Warhill HS, Jeff’s efforts encourage students about manufacturing and other career pathways as alternatives to the traditional four-year college plan. This effort at Warhill has resulted in the expansion of its Project Lead the Way program, an Early College Pilot with TNCC and Warhill being designated a STEM Governor’s Academy. Glenn Marshall serves on the strategic planning team for Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME) for a “Manufacturing Renaissance” for North American Manufacturing. He is the Chair and is leading the initiative that focuses on Manufacturing As A Desirable Career. This initiative is designed to reduce the critical shortage of skilled workers for advanced technology, logistics, and manufacturing. In this role he reaches out to business leaders, academia, students, veterans, and policymakers to promote innovative ideas and processes to grow businesses and recruit both civilian and veterans for high paying careers in designing and building things at home, again. He was the benchmarking / process excellence advocate for Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS). This position required him to identify performance gaps and find industry best practices to address those issues, and then deploying them within the company and across the supply chain. He was engaged with all levels of the corporation, supply chain, and with the customers. He led the Northrop Grumman proposal team from NNS to support the Navy’s Task Force Lean initiative. He continues to work with NNS in its outreach to the public schools and colleges on their Career Pathways initiative and AME’s “Adopt A School” to help schools and college graduate, career-ready citizens for careers in manufacturing.
